5th December 2016

Just a few weeks to go until Xmas.  Looking forward to the break from work.  Should get some quality training in over the festive period.

Did the Lotus duathlon yesterday.

6th overall in 1:32:04

Had a good battle with Philo.  Dropped him on the bike into a headwind.

R1 2.66miles, 18:41
Bike 56:38 for 19.1 miles
R2 1.65miles, 12:47

Hard, cold and windy.  Same as it always is at Lotus.

12th September 2016 - The Vitruvian

Last tri race of 2016 done.

Bloody awful monsoon conditions from start to finish.  Most horrible weather I've raced in.  I'll admit I almost didn't start.

Swim went okay although I measured the course long at 2100m ish.

Bike was terrible.  Struggled to see in the rain and speed was too slow.  Next time I'd use a road bike round here.  Also lost the large chain ring half way through second lap.

Run was good.  enjoyed picking my way back through the field.

16th August 2016

Not posted for a while.  After the flurry of early season races I've hit a bit of a lull.  3 1/2 weeks until the Vitruvian and I'm up for it.

4 strong weeks behind me.  Swimming pace has regressed a bit but still better than last year.  Biking and running both going well.

Other than that nothing to report!

5th July 2016 - Outlaw Holkham Hall

Today is the anniversary of Frankfurt.  Can still feel the pain!

Did the new half IM at Holkham this past weekend, along with most of Tri-Anglia.

Hard, hard course and pleased with my result.

Swim was murky and we were blinded by the sun!

Bike was lumpy with a lot of short leg destroying climbs and run was three loops consisting of a 2 mile climb and then 2.4m descent.  All in 25deg heat.  Hard day.

Great race though.

28th June 2016

This weekend it's the Holkham Half IM.  Not as fit as I was for Nottingham but I'll give it a bloody good go.

Funeral tomorrow.  My best mate when we were kids, Sharpie died last week.  46 years old.  Jesus life's short people make the most of it.

On that note...

Entered IM Austria 2017.  Here we go again.  12 months to get ready.

20th June 2016 - Leeds ITU

Shambles.  Worst organised event I've ever done.

Arrival at Leeds was presented with no signage to where registration was, so I had to google the university and found it due to the Expo, this was the same to find T2. there was no signage at all.

Registration found, but the bloke behind the desk didn't know where T2 was.

I then walked to T2 and was shocked to find it in building site. There was some blue carpet so I assumed they there was going to be blue carpet for all athletes. I later found this to be wrong. During the race the dismount line was approx 300m before the entrance to T2 and then only corporate athletes got blue carpet, we had to run barefoot on stones, glass and nails.

I then Got to T1 the day of the race. I walked to the entrance to T1 only be told that the green bag were 400 m in the other direction, this angered a lot on athletes.

Whilst I was setting up in T1 we were told that our helmets had to be in the blue bag, if they weren't there would be a 2 minute time penalty. This was told be an official. This is absolutely crazy - apparently this was so people didn't have an advantage, where is that stated in the BTF rules or pre race brief?

I then had to queue for 20 minutes for 12 portaloos that were at the start. I feel like this wasn't enough.

The swim penning system worked really well. and the swim was marked out well and was really good.  Great swim 25:50ish

Then transition was absolutely unacceptable. I ran bare foot on tarmac for 0.6 of a mile and same back with my bike and my wetsuit in the blue bag, this was dropped off right at the mount line. then it was an immediate hill, I personally saw 3 athletes fall off because how to mount line position and the hill.  Why not let us mount straight out of T1?  Madness.  9min T1!!!

The cycle was great, well marshaled, supported and ran perfectly.  2 mile climb, 6 mile ish decent and then turn around back up hill for 7 miles before final decent into Leeds.  Averaged 19.5mph and 1:10:XX ish.

Then into T2 as mentioned above.

Onto the run it was so congested you couldn't run freely. the aid station was good and the people were great.  Support was fantastic but just too many people.  49:40ish

Through the finish and you were rushed through and handed a medal in an area similar to my front room! then we had to cross the run course and had half a banana and a piece of orange. No race T-Shirt!!

Dry bag collect at the end was a joke.  We were promised everything would be waiting.  Mine took 5hrs from when I finished!!

I want to say that the volunteers were all absolutely awesome, they saved the day and I think they saved people going to hospital with cold related injuries.

The 3 separate events were great, route wise and support, but everything else was unacceptable, it felt like we were 3rd class citizens after the Pros and corporate athletes.

31st May 2016 - Outlaw Half 2016

First proper race of the season.  The Outlaw half IM 2016.

Travelled to Nottingham Saturday morning and camped on site.  Starting to feel like a second home.  7 times in four years!

Race Day - Sunday 29th May 2016

Swim

Swim was moved a few hundred metres down from usual start and finish due to algae in the water.  No real issue except a minute or so extra transition time for the extra run.  Water was a balmy 17 degrees.  Gun went off at 6:40 and I had a decent swim.  No issues.  Out of the water in 34:21.

T1

Long run to transition and longer still putting on jacket to keep out the cold.  The joys of British summer.

Bike

Plan was to keep to 19 mph ish, as I know I can run reasonably off that.  Again all went to plan.  First 20 mile was into the slight wind.  Not too bad, although I lost a bit of time climbing Oxon bank.  The next 10miles were rolling and I hammered through them to the South loop.  South loop roads are absolutely appalling.  2 years since I've ridden them and to be honest I've seen smoother farm tracks.  Pot holes all over.  Again though kept my speed and finished in 2:57:23.

One complaint I would have is the amount of drafting.  Groups of 20 or so for miles and miles.  4 bike marshalls on the course and you would have thought they would have been handing penalties out all over....  Only one given when I checked.  More on the penalties later.

T2

Long T2 as I was bursting for a pee.  I timed it at 2:04 if anyone is interested!!
Total T2 - 3:53

Run

Started off okay at just over 8min/mile.  Slowed slightly about 4 miles in as hamstring was getting sore.  Been having an issue for a week and I was fearful of cramp.  By 10mile it wasn't getting any worse so I picked up again.  Last two miles in 15mins to finish in 1:50:35.

Conclusion

Finished in 5:30:30.  Happy with that on a cold day.  Then.....

Got my official time and they had added 2mins.  Looked at penalty list and there was my number!  I received two minutes for a number infringement.  I always wear a number belt.  Seemed to be at the back during the bike and I remember turning it in T2.  Confused I went to see the race referee.  She asked the marshal why he gave me the penalty.  As he passed me the wind caught my number and it blew up and he couldn't read it.  Apparently I should have foreseen this and wore another number back to back.  I replied if he couldn't read my number how did he take it down to report me?  Basically £30 to appeal and I was too late anyway as you only get a 15min window after finishing.    Also in the briefing prior to the race they said number violations would be preceded by a verbal warning and only penalised for a second offence.  Still waiting for the verbal warning...

6 people penalized.  1 for drafting.  5 for number infringements.  It was a draft fest and none of the cheating sods were pulled!!!  While I get a penalty for the weather.  Nice.

Never mind.  Good race and again I'd recommend to anyone looking for a good half.
